Why Health Informatics?
The United States has one of the highest costs of healthcare in the world. In 2023, U.S. healthcare spending reached $4.5 trillion. Experts believe that by applying information technology more effectively, cost of care can be reduced and quality of care can be improved. Thus, organizations are seeking new ways to use IT and data to drive more efficient and patient-focused care. These are the broad motivating factors for the Health Information technology focus of the Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP) at UNC-Chapel Hill.

MAKE AN IMPACT
Make an Impact
Healthcare is a major part of the U.S. economy, with a significant portion of costs going to administrative overhead. Most patients still lack electronic health records. Experts believe better use of IT can lower costs and improve care. This is why UNC-Chapel Hill's Carolina Health Informatics Program focuses on advancing health information technology.
